St George’s Cathedral, the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Perth and Province of Western Australia, has today announced that Mr Stewart Smith will return to St George’s Cathedral as Assistant Organist.
Stewart is a very well-known and beloved personality in the musical life of Western Australia. He has extensive performing experience as an organist and continuo player across Australia, working with many of the leading musical institutions.

The Very Reverend Chris Chataway, Dean of St George’s Cathedral, said:
“It is with great joy that I’m able to appoint Stewart to this important role in the musical life of our Cathedral. Since my arrival, I have been consistently impressed with the way Stewart leads our worship on the organ, particularly on those larger occasions. He also involves himself in the wider life of the Cathedral; he is already loved by many here, not least our extremely talented singers. We eagerly await his arrival.”
Pending the normal employment due diligence, it is hoped that Stewart will join the team on 9 April 2023, Easter Day.

Dr Joseph Nolan, Cathedral Organist and Master of Music, Dr Joseph Nolan, commented:
“I could not be more delighted and excited that Stewart is returning to the Cathedral. Stewart is a truly accomplished and rounded musician with the necessary gifts to support the ever-rising musical standards of the Cathedral Consort and Sonus Angelorum.”

Stewart Smith, Assistant Organist-designate, said:
“In many ways, this feels like coming home for me. I look forward to forging new creative opportunities within – and outside – the Cathedral in collaboration with Dr Nolan and the Cathedral team. There will be now greater opportunity to draw on my experience and skills in new and different ways. I am thrilled to accept the Dean’s invitation at this exciting time in the life of our Mother Church
